Hi again Kelly

Yes it is usual to progress to a special lighter boot after the cast and most people manage well. I didnt 'cos I couldnt manage the Velcro with my very damaged hands (have had RA 38 years now), but I had a 'walking plaster' and initially after 'non weight bearing' I was told to start by putting 25% of my weight on the foot - work that one out! basically it was what was comfortable with the help of the crutches and I got the hang of it very quickly.

Yes the op did work well. As the ankle was fused all the pain and instability had gone (it was the left one). I have had the other one done too, so they match! I had to give up driving unfortunately because of severe neck restriction (had two fusions).
As I'm not too big I had a 'junior' wheelchair which was very narrow and went through the doorways of our 1909 house with just a bit of paint scraping by meBlink .

It is absolutely natural to be nervous before an op, everyone is, and I always find in the couple of weeks before I just want to get it over with and start recovery. The waiting is often the worst thing. Do let the nurses know you are feeling nervous when you go in, they are usually very understanding.

Lots of luck again, sure you wont need it though,
Take care,
Liz

Thanks again for replying.
I must sound like a stuck record but how long after your light boots did you go back to wearing 'normal' shoes? Also how long was you non weight bearing? I do think everyone is different. Sorry to hear you had to give up driving, that would be my worst nightmare.
Thanks again

Hi Kelly

Yes, please do remember that everyone is different! As I say I've had this RA a very long time. Non-weight bearing was at least 4 weeks, I cant quite remember exactly, then I had the walking plaster which couldnt come off till the foot properly fused (at least 3 months for me, but everyone will be different and they keep doing x-rays to monitor fusion and bones uniting). Then I wore either sandals in the summer or very soft shoes if rainy as the foot does still swell for a while.

They will explain it all to you before the op I am sure. Different surgeons always have slightly different techniques too and things may have changed since I had mine done in 2002. Hospital stay is definitely shorter now!

Just make sure you see the physios and OTs before you leave hospital, they really help your recovery.

Good luck and take care,
Lizx

Hello Kels,

This is all very interesting for me. I'm waiting to get a date for the same op from the hospital. My GP thinks it's been delayed because of all the falls and breaks in the snow and ice!

Hope all goes well and look forward to hearing all about the op, hospital and your recovery.

Warmest wishes, Ann

Thanks once again for your reply Liz.
Ann - I'm also hoping they don't cancel my op which is due next Friday, a week today. I kow they have been extra busywith all the falls due to weather.
